MoT+++ is an artist-run contemporary art space in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. it hosts an ever-growing series of exhibitions, performances, presentations, workshops, sound events and residencies from international and locally-based artists. it takes a fluid and responsive approach to programming that prioritises artists, and acknowledges the creative process as often non-linear and divergent. it collaborates with artists to help them push the boundaries of their practice, together investigating the gallery site as a ‘+1 nice place for experimentation’.
established as a project space in 2015, MoT+++ has since expanded to include MoT (sound), a +1 museum by any other name, +1 collective, +1 library and +1 residency. additional +1s are added as the space continues to grow and develop its artistic and collaborative practices.
opening first in central Saigon in a traditional white cube form, MoT+++ originally launched as Dia Projects Dong Khoi. the project space was formed in 2015 as a collaboration between long-term art collector Tran Thanh Ha (artistic pseudonym: Cam Xanh), and artist Richard Streitmatter-Tran of Dia Projects/Studio. from the beginning it marked itself as a place for experimentation that offered insight into artistic practices, also giving artists the opportunity to explore deviations in their creative process and develop new works.
in 2016 Dia Projects Dong Khoi moved to its current location in Binh Thanh and later became MoT+++ after the departure of Streitmatter-Tran. its new name took inspiration from wood-dwelling termites, who communicate with each other through vibrations, the sound they create being inaudible to each other. this new identity birthed the first +1 to be added to the programme: MoT sound, an experimental sound art night.
MoT+++ continues to add plus ones to its programming. it has since expanded out from the gallery site to include multiple residency locations, and the site-specific curation of artworks for the +1 museum by any other name. in 2018, founder Cam Xanh formed the MoT+++ collective with others that shared an affinity with MoT+++ ‘s philosophy of working, evolving MoT+++ into an artist-run space. the collective is currently comprised of Wu Chi-Tsung, Kim Duy, Cian Duggan, and Aliansah Caniago, who will each take a turn in 2019 to occupy the gallery site in an ongoing series of open studios at MoT+++.
