Hanoi-based artist Phùng Tiến Sơn will return to Saigon on Thursday April 18 for an artist presentation at MoT+++. the presentation marks the last week of his sound installation, Soundtracks, which is on view at MoT+++ until April 23, and will discuss the over six-month process behind the work.
“we set foot in Vi Xuyen martyrs’ cemetery, which had 1768 (until July 2013) graves of the deceased from 1979 to the beginning of 1990, especially in 1984 and 1988. i recorded all the information about these 1768 people, which were etched on their tombstones. from the information i collected, i used Google Maps to draw connecting paths from their hometowns to Vi Xuyen (where they sacrificed their lives and their remaining corpses were concentrated). i separated these paths from the maps, for all that’s left are the cold and meaningless lines. in other words, we can only see 1768 winding strokes. is there anything left but 1768 routes which all lead to death at the same place?”

about the artist:
Phùng Tiến Sơn is a multimedia visual artist and university dropout from Hanoi, Vietnam. music is a continuing feature of Sơn’s practice, and he cites sound and technology as important influences in his work. past exhibitions include group shows as an ongoing member of the Nhà Sàn Collective, the Hanoi Collective Orchestra in 2015 and 2016, and Utopia Land at Hanoi’s Heritage Space in 2017. in 2018, Sơn performed in Big Day of Performances – Happy Birthday Billas part of MoT+++’s six-month performance plus programme.
Soundtracks was first exhibited in the Nhà Sàn Collective show Mise en Scene in 2016.

“chúng tôi đặt chân đến nghĩa trang liệt sĩ Vi Xuyên, nơi an nghỉ của 1768 (cho đến tháng 7 năm 2013) ngôi mộ của người quá cố từ năm 1979 đến đầu năm 1990, đặc biệt là vào năm 1984 và 1988.
